Reach Out and Talk With Potential Roommates

If this is your first move away from home, it can be nerve-racking. To help ease some of the stress, we suggest first reaching out to your new roommates. You will get to know them, making the move more comfortable. You can also discuss what communal items that each roommate will bring. These items may include, depending on the housing type:

  • Television
  • Microwave
  • Coffee Pot
  • Kitchen Items
  • Refrigerator
  • Furniture

Create a Checklist of Items to Pack

Once you know what you need to take with you, make a list. This will help you to organize and not forget anything in the chaos and excitement. Create different sections on your list for desk items, clothing, bedding, bathroom, kitchen, and more. Organizing your list will put you into the mindset to then organize your packing. If you pre-plan your packing, you can also unpack quicker.

When it comes to clothing, we suggest only packing for the current season. You will most likely visit home before the seasons change. With limited space, you don’t want to clutter your room with items you won’t regularly use. Don’t forget photos or special keepsakes. These small items will make your new space feel more like home.

Use Plastic Bins to Move and for Room Storage

As previously mentioned, packing items in “zones” will make unpacking easier. Labeling your boxes helps you to know where those items are going. A unique piece of advice that we give is to use storage bins instead of cardboard boxes. There are not many storage areas in dorms or student apartments, and you can’t easily bring shelves or drawers. Using storage bins allows you to repurpose them for in-room storage. Then when it is time to pack at the end of the school year, you already have your packing containers.
